Ein Reisebericht von unserem Besuch der in der Region Ermlamd-Masuren gelegenen Lazarus-Sozialstationen und des Caritas-Hospizes in Darłowo (English version at the end).
11.05.2025/12.05.25 – Koszalin & Darłowo
Unser kleiner Konvoi ist am 11. in Koszalin angekommen und wir freuten uns auf das Treffen mit Freunden. Die Übernachtung erfolgte im Centrum Edukacyjno Formacyjne. Abends fand mit Bischof Krzystof Zadarko und dem leitenden Direktor der Caritas Ksiądz Łukasz Bikun ein intensiver Austausch über die aktuellen Herausforderungen und Gemeinsamkeiten der Hospiz- und Sozialarbeit in Deutschland und Polen statt.
Am Morgen des 12. wurden wir von Sonnenschein begrüßt und wir fuhren zum Caritas-Hospiz in Darłowo. Mit dem Hospiz sind wir schon länger im freundschaftlichen Kontakt. Mit vereinten Kräften wurden die Spenden für das Hospiz ausgeladen und von Bischof K. Zadarko, dem Caritas-Direktor Ksiądz Łukasz Bikun und der Leiterin der der Stiftung Fundacja Charytatywna „Morze Mitosci“ entgegen genommen. Übrigens lebt das Hospiz ausschließlich von den ehrenamtlichen Aktivitäten und gesammelten Spenden, die die Stiftung organisiert, da es ausser einem kleinen Budget aus dem Gesundheitsfonds keine auskömmlichen staatlichen Mittel gibt. Nach der Besichtigung des Hospizes und einem Imbiss konnten wir das Denkmal für die Sternenkinder, die Kapelle St.Gertrud, den Rathausplatz und die Kirche mit dem Altar für alle Flüchtlinge besichtigen. Danach fuhren wir nach Elbląg wo wir abends zu einem ersten Austausch mit dem Landrat Maciej Romanowski, einem Ehrenmitglied des Lazarus-Ordens, verabredet waren.
12.05.25-14.05.25 – Elbląg/Ełk/Pasłęk
Am 13. fuhren wir von Elbłak zur Lazarus-Sozialstation in Ełk. Wir wurden freundlich von Diözesan-Caritas-Direktor Dariusz Kruczyński, dem Vizedirektor Ryszard Savicki und Sr. Margot empfangen und erfuhren die Hintergründe, warum diese Station in einer sehr engen Kooperation mit der Caritas betrieben wird. Schön war es zu sehen, dass hier der ökumenische Gedanke gelebt wird und unser grünes Kreuz nicht nur ein dekoratives Element ist. Von Dariusz Kruczyński wurde der Wunsch zu einer intensiveren Vernetzung mit den anderen Lazarus-Stationen geäußert, wozu wir im weiteren Verlauf der Reise erste Schritte eingeleitet haben und auch einen Besuch in Deutschland bei einer der zukünftigen Ordensveranstaltungen angeregt haben. Die Einrichtung in Ełk beinhaltet Mutter-Kind-Unterkünfte, Seniorenwohnungen, einen ambulanten Pflegedienst, Betreuungsdienste, Lagerflächen für Lebensmittelpakete für Bedürftige, Hilfsmittellager, Ergo-und Physiotherapie. Von Bewohnern, die sich freuten, mit uns deutsch sprechen zu können, wurden wir herzlich zur Besichtigung ihrer Wohnungen eingeladen. Auch wenn die Station schuldenfrei ist, gibt es keine sichere Finanzierung für die Aktivitäten der ambulanten Pflegedienste und die Organisation vom Sach- und Geldspenden ist für die Leitung unabdingbar. Wir sind dankbar, dass wir bei unserem Besuch so herzlich aufgenommen wurden und freuen uns diese Kontakte zukünftig noch vertiefen zu können.
Nach den Besuch der Lazarus-Station Ełk und dem Abschiedsfoto mussten wir uns wieder zügig auf den Rückweg machen, um pünktlich der Dinner-Einladung von Landrat Romanowski, der Bürgermeisterin von Elblak und der Stiftungsleiterin des Kreiskrankenhauses Pasłęk Folge leisten zu können. Die Gastgeber begrüßten uns herzlich und bei einem leckeren Essen und angeregten Gesprächen wurden alte Freundschaften bekräftigt und neue Kontakte geknüpft. Landrat Romanowski ehrte das Wirken unseres Ordensbruders Bernd Hinz für die Kreisgemeinschaft Preussisch-Holland und die enge freundschaftliche Beziehung, die solch ein Treffen stärkt. Der Abend wird uns in guter Erinnerung bleiben.
Am 14. erlebten wir vormittags in der Sozialstation Elbłak einen mitreißenden musikalischen Empfang durch das Lazarus-Orchester, in dem Patienten und Therapeuten gemeinsam musizieren. Danach wurden wir von der Stationsleitung Frau Golombiewska über die vielfältigen Aktivitäten der Station informiert. Wacker holt das 21 Jahre alte Fahrzeug Menschen aus dem Umland ab. Überall zeigt sich, dass der Spirit dieser Lazarus-Gründung gelebt und das große Herz von jedem einzelnen, der von der Gründung an beteiligt war und mitgearbeitet hat, erfüllt ist. Bei der anschließenden Führung durch die neun Therapiesäle, die Küche, der. Physio- und Ergotherapie und dem wunderschönen Garten waren wir beeindruckt von den Keramiken, Holz- und Metallarbeiten, den Bildern und der Wandgestaltung. Die Patienten sind mit Begeisterung bei den Therapien aktiv und ihre künstlerischen Talente werden gefördert.
Nachmittags trafen wir am Kreiskrankenhaus Pasłęk ein und wurden von der Leiterin der Trägergesellschaft Frau Präses Teresa Cierachowska empfangen. Die 150-jährige Geschichte des Hauses zeigt sich in der Kapelle und dem noch vorhandenen Johanniter-Kreuz, welches aus einer alten Türe „gerettet“ wurde. Wir durften die modernen Einrichtungen von Krankenanfahrt, der Erstversorgung und Weiterleitung, der Diagnose-Abteilung mit MRT, die mit 22 Intensivbetten ausgestattete Station für beatmungspflichtige Menschen und das Rehazentrum, das auch Kinder therapiert, besichtigen. Landrat Romanowski berichtete hierbei über die Ausstattung, die finanzielle Lage und die Bauprojekte des unter Aufsicht der Bezirks- und Woywodschaftsbehörden gestellten Krankenhauses. Ergänzt wurde dies von unserer Lazrus-Ordensschwester Monika Hinz mit den Berichten über die Aktivitäten der Landsmannschaft Preussisch-Holland für dieses Haus. Überall fanden sich auch Hinweise auf das Wirken unseres verstorbenen Lazarus-Ordensbruders Bernd Hinz.
Den Abschluss unseres sehr vielgestaltigen und mit Hilfe der Assistentin von Herrn Romanowski sehr straff geführten Programms übernahm am Mittwoch die Bürgermeisterin von Pasłek Frau Elsbeth Teresa Wasiuk, indem sie uns in Begleitung des Landrats ins Schloss, wo sich der Ratssaal für den Stadtrat, ihr Büro und ein kleines Museum befinden, einlud. Mit einem Film wurde die Vorstellung der historischen Stadt bebildert, was die fast simultane Übersetzung, die Agnieszka und Piotr Kloska auf unserer Reise leisteten, noch plastischer machte. Anschließend wurden wir durch das Museum geführt und konnten u.a. die drei ältesten gefundenen Dokumente der Stadt anschauen. Eine nochmalige Ortsveränderung brachte uns auf den Golfplatz, wo wir über eine finnische Investition in der an Industrie und somit an Arbeitsplätzen armen Regionen erfuhren. Das Essen erfüllte auch Wünsche nach regionalen Speisen: Piroggen – wie gut, dass wir uns am Vormittag beim Singen, Schunkeln und Tanzen gelockert hatten!!!
15.05.25/16.05.25 – Klebarku Wielkim/Biskupiez/Szczytno
Ganz im Schatten von Kirche und Pfarrhaus befindet sich die Lazarus-Station Klebarku Wielkim, von der aus, wie die einzige ehrenamliche Helferin und der zuständige staatliche Beamte berichteten, gebrauchte Pflegehilfmittel an ca 80 Pflegebedürftige verliehen werden. Der Informationsaustausch fand im schön ausgestatteten Pfarrhaus statt. Beeindruckend war der Besuch in der Kirche. Seitdem Reliquien vom heiligen Kreuz dort aufbewahrt werden, wurde sie mit Unterstützung der Malteser innen aufwändig restauriert und ist aussen fast fertig renoviert.
Den Donnerstag Nachmittag hatten wir für Biskupiez (Bischofstein) und der dortigen Sozialstation reserviert. Sechs Lazarus-Schwesten, zwei Ärzte und eine Verwaltungskraft haben sich hier auf ambulante Palliativpflege spezialisiert. Sie sind in Räumlichkeiten, die auch von Gruppen der Kirchengemeinde genutzt werden, untergebracht. Derzeit werden 36 intensiv pflegebedürftige Personen versorgt. Sr. Renate hob die wunderbare Teamarbeit und das Engagement der Fachkräfte und Ärzte, die natürlich alle im Einsatz waren, hervor.
Die Rückfahrt nach Olnstyn unterbrachen wir zwischen Rastenburg und Rössel in Święta Lipka (Heiligelinde), wo wir die herrliche Ausstattung der Basilika und das Spiel der Orgel von 1721 mit ihren beweglichen Figuren in der Wallfahrskirche und den Kreuzgängen genießen konnten. Reliquien der Gebeine der vier Evangelisten, der geschnitzte Lindenbaum mit dem Bild der Madonna und die Wandmalereien so wie auch die Akustik machen diesen Stop zum Highlight.
Zum Abschluss waren am Freitag in der Station in Szczytno zu Gast. Auch hier war der „Spirit von Lazarus“ spürbar und mit mobiler Pflege und Hilfsmittelverleih wird ein wertvoller Beitrag zur Versorgung von pflegebedürftigen Personen geleistet. Hinzukommt, dass auch Angehörige der deutschen Minderheit, die häufig in prekären Verhältnissen leben, ggf. auch kostenlos durch die Station betreut werden. Dies war ein toller Abschluss für unsere Reise durch Ermland-Masuren.
11.05.2025/12.05.25 – Koszalin & Darłowo
Our small convoy arrived in Koszalin on the 11th and we were looking forward to meeting up with friends. We spent the night at the Centrum Edukacyjno Formacyjne. In the evening, Bishop Krzystof Zadarko and the Managing Director of Caritas Ksiądz Łukasz Bikun discussed the current challenges and similarities of hospice and social work in Germany and Poland.
We were greeted by sunshine on the morning of the 12th and travelled to the Caritas hospice in Darłowo. We have been in friendly contact with the hospice for a long time. We joined forces to unload the donations for the hospice and received them from Bishop K. Zadarko, Caritas Director Ksiądz Łukasz Bikun and the head of the Fundacja Charytatywna „Morze Mitosci“ foundation. Incidentally, the hospice survives solely on the voluntary activities and donations organised by the foundation, as there is no adequate state funding apart from a small budget from the health fund. After a tour of the hospice and a snack, we were able to visit the memorial for the star children, the chapel of St Gertrud, the town hall square and the church with the altar for all refugees. We then travelled to Elbląg where we had an appointment in the evening for our first meeting with District Administrator Maciej Romanowski, an honorary member of the Order of Saint Lazarus.
12.05.25-14.05.25 – Elbląg/Ełk/Pasłęk
On the 13th we travelled from Elbłak to the Lazarus Social Centre in Ełk. We were warmly welcomed by Diocesan Caritas Director Dariusz Kruczyński, Deputy Director Ryszard Savicki and Sister Margot and learnt the background to why this ward is run in very close cooperation with Caritas. It was nice to see that the ecumenical idea is put into practice here and that our green cross is not just a decorative element. Dariusz Kruczyński expressed the desire for more intensive networking with the other Lazarus centres, for which we initiated the first steps during the course of the trip and also suggested a visit to Germany at one of the order’s future events. The facility in Ełk includes mother and child accommodation, flats for the elderly, an outpatient nursing service, care services, storage space for food parcels for the needy, a warehouse for relief supplies, occupational therapy and physiotherapy. We were warmly invited by residents who were happy to speak German with us to view their flats. Even though the ward is debt-free, there is no secure funding for the activities of the outpatient care services and the organisation of donations in kind and money is essential for the management. We are grateful for the warm welcome we received during our visit and look forward to deepening these contacts in the future.
After visiting the Lazarus ward in Ełk and taking a farewell photo, we had to make our way back quickly in order to be on time for the dinner invitation from District Administrator Romanowski, the mayor of Elblak and the head of the Pasłęk district hospital foundation. The hosts gave us a warm welcome and old friendships were reaffirmed and new contacts made over a delicious meal and lively discussions. District Administrator Romanowski honoured the work of our brother Bernd Hinz for the Prussian-Holland district community and the close friendship that such a meeting strengthens. We will remember the evening fondly.
On the morning of the 14th, we were treated to a rousing musical reception by the Lazarus Orchestra, in which patients and therapists make music together, at the Elbłak Social Ward. We were then informed by ward manager Mrs Golombiewska about the ward’s wide range of activities. The 21-year-old vehicle picks up people from the surrounding area. Everywhere you look, you can see that the spirit of this Lazarus foundation is alive and that the big heart of every single person who has been involved and worked here since its foundation is full. During the subsequent tour of the nine therapy rooms, the kitchen, the physiotherapy and occupational therapy. physiotherapy and occupational therapy and the beautiful garden, we were impressed by the ceramics, wood and metal work, the pictures and the wall decorations. The patients are enthusiastically involved in the therapies and their artistic talents are encouraged.
In the afternoon, we arrived at Pasłęk District Hospital and were welcomed by the head of the supporting organisation, Ms Teresa Cierachowska. The 150-year history of the hospital is reflected in the chapel and the St John’s cross, which was „rescued“ from an old door. We were given a tour of the modern facilities of the hospital, including the first aid and referral departments, the diagnostics department with MRI, the intensive care unit with 22 beds for people requiring mechanical ventilation and the rehabilitation centre, which also treats children. District Administrator Romanowski reported on the equipment, the financial situation and the construction projects of the hospital, which is under the supervision of the district and voivodeship authorities. This was supplemented by our Lazarus Order sister Monika Hinz with reports on the activities of the Landsmannschaft Preussisch-Holland for this house. Everywhere there were also references to the work of our deceased Brother of the Order of St Lazarus, Bernd Hinz.
On Wednesday, the mayor of Pasłek, Mrs Elsbeth Teresa Wasiuk, concluded our very varied and, with the help of Mr Romanowski’s assistant, very tightly managed programme by inviting us, accompanied by the district administrator, to the castle, where the council chamber for the city council, her office and a small museum are located. The presentation of the historic city was illustrated with a film, which made the almost simultaneous translation provided by Agnieszka and Piotr Kloska on our trip even more vivid. We were then given a guided tour of the museum and were able to see, among other things, the three oldest documents found in the city. Another change of location took us to the golf course, where we learnt about a Finnish investment in a region that is poor in industry and therefore jobs. The food also fulfilled our desire for regional dishes: Pierogi – how good that we had loosened up by singing, swaying and dancing in the morning!!!
15.05.25/16.05.25 – Klebarku Wielkim/Biskupiez/Szczytno
The Lazarus centre Klebarku Wielkim is located in the shadow of the church and vicarage, from where, as the only volunteer helper and the responsible state official reported, used care aids are lent to around 80 people in need of care. The exchange of information took place in the beautifully furnished vicarage. The visit to the church was impressive. Since the relics of the Holy Cross have been kept there, the interior has been extensively restored with the support of the Maltese and the exterior is almost completely renovated.
We had reserved Thursday afternoon for Biskupiez (Bischofstein) and the social centre there. Six Lazarus Sisters, two doctors and an administrator have specialised in outpatient palliative care here. They are accommodated in rooms that are also used by groups from the church community. Currently, 36 people in need of intensive care are being cared for. Sister Renate emphasised the wonderful teamwork and commitment of the specialists and doctors, who were of course all on duty.
We stopped on the way back to Olnstyn between Rastenburg and Rössel in Święta Lipka (Heiligelinde), where we were able to enjoy the marvellous interior of the basilica and the playing of the organ from 1721 with its moving figures in the pilgrimage church and the cloisters. Relics of the bones of the four evangelists, the carved lime tree with the image of the Madonna and the wall paintings as well as the acoustics make this stop a highlight.
Finally, we visited the centre in Szczytno on Friday. Here, too, the „spirit of Lazarus“ was palpable and mobile care and the rental of aids make a valuable contribution to the care of people in need of care. In addition, members of the German minority, who often live in precarious circumstances, can also be cared for free of charge by the centre. This was a great end to our trip through Warmia-Masuria.
